ELIMINATE THIS DUST!!
The pictures
are of beans being combined that were not
rolled, if they had been rolled there
would be no dust or
dirt. Rolling eliminates the problems with football-size and smaller rocks
by pushing
them into the ground
and therefore allowing no damage to be done to guards or cicles on combine heads.
No pods are being
left in the field due to cutting closer to the ground
and making the stand better.
Rolling
levels the top fluff and eliminates the root balls from
the BT corn.
During the spring of
2010, we had
a farmer who rented a land roller.
While rolling,
his older neighbor came
out told him "it looked like he
was compacting the
ground" and this
farmer told him that
was not the case, that he was going to prove it to him.
He called his wife or daughter
to bring out one
dozen un-boiled eggs. He buried the eggs about
1/2" to 1" deep into the ground in front
of the roller and
marking them with flags to know where they were.
He was short two flags and used
cornstalks to mark
the remaining two eggs, then ran over the buried
eggs with the roller. After
rolling over the
buried eggs, he
got out of the tractor and unburied all twelve eggs.
Out of the twelve eggs,
ten where unbroken,
one had cracked, and the last one had broken due to
the cornstalk being pushed into it.
Compaction is not an
issue with the Riteway roller, it strictly eliminates
the dust and dirt
while making it easier
to combine due to less mechanical
wear or breakdowns on your machinery.
Personally running a
compaction meter over the areas rolled and not rolled
you will find that there is
absolutely no
difference. Both the rolled and unrolled topsoil
can be moved with your foot.
During the wet
falls in the past, rolling made it possible to combine beans when
the ground was muddy and the beans
were 14% because the
head absolutely would not push. Insurance
companies are now claiming that the areas
where rollers are
being used, are having less rock damage claims to
combines. While the seed
companies are
wanting no dirt in their seed
beans and some seed companies
are telling their
dealers that they "must" roll their seed beans.
Personally after six years of
rolling our own bean ground, we prefer ahead of the
planter, second choice
would be 2" to 3" tall, and thirdly
rolling right behind the planter.

Many farmers have begun rolling corn
stalks instead of using the stalk cutter and then
ripping the ground. Those
same farmers have started rolling
their corn on corn ground before they plant and have
picked up a 5 to 15%
increase due to the even emergence.
If you follow the planter going thru the field after
you have rolled on a four-
wheeler, you will seldom see a
planter unit move where as if you follow a planter
after not being rolled the
planter units move like the keys on
a piano.
