The pictures below are of  beans being combined that were not rolled, if  they had been rolled there would

be no dust or dirt.  Also, rolling eliminates the problems with  football-size and smaller rocks

 by pushing them into the ground.  There are no pods left in the field due to being able

 to cut closer to the ground.  There is little or no damage done to guards or cicle.

This spring, we had a farmer who had a rented a land roller from us.  While he was rolling

his neighbor come out and said to him "boy that sure is compacting the ground" and this

individual told him that it was not compacting the ground and that he was going to prove it

to him.  So he called his wife or daughter and had her bring out one dozen of eggs

and buried them about 2" deep into the ground in front of the roller and marking

them with flags to know where they were.  He was short two flags and used cornstalks

to mark the location of all twelve eggs.  He then got into the tractor and ran over where

he buried those eggs.  Got out of the tractor and unburied every egg.  Out of the twelve

eggs, ten where unbroken and complete, one had cracked and one was broke because

of the cornstalk that pushed down into it.  This is not a compaction roller but simply

a machine to help eliminate dust and to make it easier combining

and less mechanical wear on your machinery.

Some farmers roll immediately after they plant, or some after the beans are 4" or 5" tall, or rolling before the planter. 

You can even roll corn on corn ground before the planter to make a nice seed bed to plant in.

Some farmers are even rolling corn stalks instead of using the stalk cutter and then working the ground.
